Why Collect Antique Furniture?

Some people only want the latest and the greatest of everything.  Others appreciate older treasures that provide a connection to the past.  When these people see a Victorian desk, they wonder who might have sat at it in years gone by.  They can form vivid image in their mind of hand written love notes being penned by long gone strangers.      The antique collector looks at the old pieces of furniture he or she collects and wonders what wonderful and even commonplace stories might have unfolded while they sat as silent witnesses for several lifetimes’ worth of years.   They find joy and a nostalgic connection to the past in every antique they purchase and add to their own collection.  They relish the idea of adding their own story to something special that may outlive them and be passed on to a collector who might not even be born yet.

There are many different types of antique furniture that are faithfully collected by people today.  Two of the most popular pieces however are antique chairs and antique desks.    If you are a lover of antique furniture, you may struggle at times trying to find the best places to find what you seek.  There are many reproduction items available for sale today.  Some of these are sold at local retail outlets for prices that are much less that one would spend on an original antique piece of furniture.  If that is what you are looking for, you should have no problem heading to a local furniture showroom and finding what you seek.  For collectors though, these hold no interest.

Probably the best place to find antique furniture at reasonable prices is local estate sales.  Although visiting these sales can be a hit or miss proposition, you are likely to find merchandise that is priced to move.  If you are equipped with a vehicle for hauling the larger items you may purchase, you will find that there will be days that bargains all but fall into your lap.  For those who do not have the patience to carry out such a search, online sites are probably the best bet.  eBay has become the place to check for hard to find items in recent years.  Although this is more convenient, prices will be higher in most instances as you compete to win the items you crave.

However you decide to proceed with your search for antiques, remember that in many cases you are actually making an investment in something that will increase in value over time.  Even more importantly however, realize that you are purchasing a small piece of history that you can hold on to and treasure through the years.
