Umbrella Lighting Systems for the Yard

Patio umbrellas have been around for quite some time, but they have become more advanced over the years. Aluminum is taking over steel in many cases because it is lighter weight and resists rust. High end, sun proof fabrics like Sunbrella is being used nowadays. Even the umbrella’s basic purpose is getting a makeover. In addition to being a shade, they can also become a light. Manufacturers are making patio umbrellas with built in lights. Since umbrellas already reside in places that get used frequently, it makes sense to attach lights to them instead of buying a separate fixture. These light kits are relatively inexpensive and are quick to install.

Even though installation is a cinch, some people would rather buy an umbrella pre-lit. If you do not already own a patio umbrella, this may be the best option. Pre-lit umbrellas are equipped with lights right out of the box. Simple plug them in and you’re ready to go. To make things even easier, you can obtain a solar powered umbrella which uses sun energy for power. A solar panel on the top of the shade soaks up sunlight and uses it for power after sun down.

To light an existing umbrella, centralized pole lights can be employed. A pole light is a simple device with many light bulbs which work together. Shaped like a small disc, this light is quite functional in design. Attach it to the pole, turn it on and you have increased clarity on the patio. The light can be raised or lowered as necessary to alter the light intensity. Some patio umbrella lighting models have adjustable light pods which direct light onto different locations. Always compare your pole diameter to the fixture’s rating to ensure compatibility. While most pole lights are made from a plain plastic base, some are quite elaborate looking.
