Things You Should Know About Feather Pillows
You’ll no doubt sleep better if you’re armed with a little bit of knowledge about feather pillows. Down feathers are those that like closest to the bird’s body and is mother nature’s gift to help keep the birds warm. Most people enjoy sleeping on goose down feather pillows rather those from ducks. Down pillows are more expensive, have better lofts, are more durable and are absent of quills so you don’t have to worry about being poked at 2 am.
Feather pillows become flat quickly, are cheaper and you run the risk of being polk by a feather quill. The quill is the spine that runs down the center of a feather. A down and feather blend pillow falls somewhere in between the two depending on the down/feather ratio. If you have a blend that contains more down than feathers it typically will last longer and you can expect better support and comfort.
The quality of feather pillow depends on the quality of fill and the specie of bird. Hungarian geese down clusters are the most expensive. You could also have a pillow filled with geese down clusters from Canada, Europe or China. Also the size and maturity of the bird adds to the quality of the pillow. Bigger and more mature bird’s feather and down clusters are softer, fluffier and more durable. If you buy a high quality down pillow the loft and airflow will be better and it will last much longer.
Compression over time will flatten out the down feathers and the pillow will need to be replaced. Periodic fluffing can extend the life of the pillow but realize eventually all natural fiber pillows will be crushed. If feather pillows are not properly processed and treated moisture can ruin the natural filling in the pillow. It’s important to put a pillow protector over your pillow because facial creams, makeup and facial creams will penetrate the pillow shell and be absorbed by the down. High quality feather pillows can provide a good night sleep for years to come.
