The Coat of a Havanese Dog

Many dogs typically only have a short or a long coat. Even though havanese dogs typically have a long soft coat, it is also common with havanese dog grooming to find their fur styled shorter with a bit of the natural wave. There is a lot of information on havanese dogs, but here is some basics about their coat and what to expect.

When they are trained as show dogs, their coat is long, soft, and silky. Like a humans hair it is important and necessary for it to be brushed out at least once a day. If this is not done, it will get tangles and mats that will be difficult to brush out.

The Havanese coat is not course nor dense but rather very soft, light, with a slightly heavier undercoat. When the coat is cut shorter it can often become too silky, possibly looking a bit oily or it could have a very wavy appearance. Your coat of your havanese should always be soft to touch and never harsh or coarse.

Havanese dogs are also known for having a hypoallergenic coat. They still may release dander that can aggravate allergies, but they typically do not shed or shed very little. Havanese also have a tropical nature and because of this their thick coat is light and used to act as a sunshade on a hot day. So, even thought their hair is longer and may give off the appearance of warmth, they need additional protection against cold winter days.

The coat of a Havanese dog can be a variety of different colors. Some think that white is the most common. But, havanese are acceptable in al colors and patterns. All colored dogs should have a black nose and black areas around their eyes. With the chocolate or other multi-colored havanese dogs their pigments may match more to their coat color.

These beautiful dogs and their coats will be recognized whether you prefer your dog to have a short long fur. Their playfulness and energy will always attract others to their beauty.
