A lot of myths about Pilates are doing their rounds today. And a lot of otherwise intelligent people like me and you are falling for those myths and allowing those myths to prevent them from ever practicing Pilates. And as Pilates is such an excellent exercise – it strengthens your core, tightens your whole body and also makes you more flexible, it is a pity that myths have so much power. Well I’m here to take back some of that power and to bust some of the myths.
1. Pilates practice is limited to the super fit
All you need to practice Pilates is to have generally good health and be free of any serious injuries. Other than that you don’t have to be super fit. But with regular practice, you might just as well become super fit.
2. Pilates practice is only for women
Maybe with most of the instructors being female and the majority of Pilates practisers are also women, the notion is that Pilates is reserved for women only. But the truth is that lots of men are also enjoying and benefiting from Pilates.
3. Pilates doesn’t involve weight training
In Pilates the focus is more on resistance training instead of strength training. But resistance training has exactly the safe effect on muscles as strength training. The only difference with weight training is that weight training uses heavier weights as resistance training.
4. You have to be flexible to practice Pilates
Flexibility comes with practice and that’s where Pilates is excellent at. Being flexible as a Pilates beginner are beneficially, but it is not necessary – you will become flexible with practice.
5. Pilates is not a proper workout
Pilates is a proper workout. It tones and tightens the whole body and it also strengthens the core (the muscles of your lower back, abs and hip flexors). It also improves ones flexibility and stamina and it reduces stress. Any one who doesn’t see that as a proper exercise has too high standards.
If you are a beginner of Pilates, I recommend that you either use the Pilates machine or attend a class. The ellen croft supreme pilates machine has added resistance and will thus give you a challenge. For a Pilates machine that also adds some cardio, the aero pilates machine might be the one for you.
Now that all the myths are busted, hopefully more people will start enjoying Pilates practice. And if they do, they will start seeing results soon – a stronger core, more energy, a tighter and more tones body and they will also be more flexible and supple.
