For years, most of us poured gallons of hair products on our heads without so much as a thought to what was in them. Watch our diets? Sure! Pay attention to what we put on our bodies? Not so much. The truth is that what you put on your body is just as important as what you put IN your body. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it absorbs toxins just as much as any other organ. This is why so many people are making the switch from conventional shampoo to organic hair shampoo.
Sodium Laurlyl Sulphates
Sodium Laurlyl Sulphates, or SLS, are very harsh on your skin. In fact, when researchers are working to develop new products that are soothing to the skin, they use SLS to first irritate it so that they can test out the healing powers of their products. SLS is also used in garage floor cleaners and engine greasers. You have to be careful because many “organic” shampoos still contain SLS. This is because so many people refuse to give up the lather that they are accustomed to and Sodium Laurlyl Sulpahte is responsible for the lather.
Parabens
Parabens are used to preserve shampoos and other cosmetics. The problem is that they are believed to impact the effect that estrogen has on the body. Medical research has linked parabens and breast cancer and additional studies show that they may also impact fertility. This seems to be especially true in men.
Fragrance
Most experts agree that conventional fragrances in shampoos can impact your immune system and that many of them are also highly toxic. Also, listing parabens as fragrance or musk is a very common way to try to hide the fact that they are in shampoos. Of course, just because you are choosing organic shampoo does not mean that you have to give up great smelling hair products. Most organic shampoos, like Modern Organic Products use essential oils to make them smell great.
