Do Men Really File More Auto Insurance Claims Than Women?

If you are a single male, young or old, trying to find auto insurance for your car, you are in for an awakening when it comes to your insurance rates. Even if you think you are a great driver and have a clean driving record and a clean credit record, those things will not help that much. It may not sound fair to you, but you are going to find that most insurance companies will charge you more for your insurance policy than they charge a female in your same age group. Insurance companies have always viewed the male driver as being more aggressive in nature and these tendencies are thought to be carried over into their driving habits. These would include a male driver who doesn’t feel he needs to wear a seat belt, who believes he can drive fast and still be safe, and who feels that he can safely drink and drive.

Men shouldn’t despair, things are changing. During the past few years, women are driving more often and they are on the road for longer periods of time. Women are sometimes the “taxi” for their family. They drive to and from work, they drive the children to school and extracurricular activities, they run errands for their parents who are unable to drive as much anymore, etc. All this driving also increases the stress women drivers are feeling, which tends to bring about aggressive tendencies they didn’t used to have. For the time being, men are still being charged more for auto insurance discounters, but if female activities keep on increasing, it may change.

Men also tend to drive vehicles in the high-risk categories such as big trucks, or costlier autos, or cars with a lot of “extras” such as fancy rims, expensive music systems, etc. These things tend to make car thieves more tempted to steal parts off a car or the whole car belonging to males.

The current statistics still show that in one year, men were involved in over 27,000 more fatal accidents, over 400,000 more injury accidents, and over 1,400,000 more property damage claims than females were. This added up to over 1,900,000 more insurance claims in one year for males.
