A resume is an important part of the job search process. Many professionals take their resume for granted and do not realize how vital it is. A resume is a physical representation of you. If you resume is not well done you may not even get a chance for a face to face interview. Building the right resume does not have to be a confusing and frustrating process. Follow these three principles and you will gain more interviews.
First, you need to have a goal for the resume. A resume has a much different purpose from a job application. A job application is just listing facts and displaying an exhaustive job history. A resume is a sales brochure selling the potential employer on you. Potential hiring managers want to hire people who are specialists and no just generalists. If your resume is just a boring job description then you more than likely will not receive many interviews. Make sure you look over the job description for the position and include any important info into your resume. You might even want to try to put a title at the top of the resume as this can show everyone the type of position you are targeting. I think this is better use of the top of the resume then a resume objective. An objective usually just states the obvious.
Second, build a solid qualifications summary. Under the title of the resume build your case for why you are qualified for that position. List specific job duties, experience, and even software knowledge to prove your case. Again, the top of the resume is such an important part of the selling process. Most resumes only get a short look and the top of the resume may be your only chance at getting their attention.
Lastly, you need to sell your accomplishments. Employers want to see the goods. maybe you have specialized knowledge from a career college or you have received some advance career training along the way. All these things are important to making a resume that gets results.
