Should I Use Low Voltage Lighting?

Low voltage outdoor garden lighting is one of the three options that you have for installing landscape lighting on your property. Out of the three, it’s the most practical, easiest to setup, and offers you the most options for installing your lights.  There are several reasons why it’s better than installing solar or standard light fixtures.

Solar light fixtures can be unreliable and you can only place them in certain areas of your property.  You can’t place them in the shade or in any area where they don’t receive direct sunlight.  They also are usually a bit dimmer than normal garden lights.  The combination of these two aspects really limits you if you decide to install a completely solar garden lighting system.  Standard fixtures are just as bad.  You can place them wherever you want, granted that you hire an electrician and let him dig up your yard to place the wires the required depth below the ground.  Standard lights also run on one hundred twenty volts, which uses up a lot of energy and can drive your home’s electricity bills sky high.

You can get around these limitations by installing low voltage lights.  With low voltage light you can install your lights anywhere within a reasonable distance of the transformer, no matter if they get direct sunlight or not.  You also don’t have to dig any ditches for the cords you run because they aren’t a shock hazard.  All that’s required is that you place them out of sight for appearance sake and so that they don’t become a trip hazard.  Finally, low voltage lights are also greener than lights hooked up to a regular circuit because the cord you run to them uses much less electricity.
