How To: Sharpening Your Hunting Knives
Before you head out on a hunting trip it is imperative that you be prepared. That means bringing your arsenal of tools along with you. Obviously this is what you need to kill the deer, foul or other animal but also for your own protection. No matter what you end up having to use the knives for, it is important to keep them sharp if you want them to work properly.
Sharpening your hunting knives is a pretty simple process, one that anyone can take on with a little time and the right tools.
To start sharpening a hunting knife you first need to purchase a sharpening stone. There are lots of different gadgets and gizmos you could use but the stone will get your knives the sharpest. It also allows you to be more particular when sharpening, for instance if you wanted to focus on only one part of the blade.
A sharpening guide can also be helpful. This is a device that clamps on to the knife and helps guarantee you get the most accurate angle when sharpening hunting blades. This tool can be a lifesaver for first time knife sharpeners who are a bit wary and worried of getting hurt.
To sharpen each knife you place it in the sharpening guide and then begin slicing it down the sharpening stone on an angle. Test the blade as you go, being careful not to press down too hard. If you have been sharpening the knife properly it will be extra sharp and you do not want to get nicked.
You will see when you have created a rougher edge to the blade then you need to polish it. This process does not need to be completed every single time you go camping, however it should be done on a regular basis. The more often you use the knives the more often they will need to be sharpened, it only makes sense.
