How Much You Should Expect To Pay For Photo Management Software
There is actually quite a big range in prices for photo management software. You can purchase photo management software anywhere from free to around $400. There are some programs that cost a lot more but those are generally for people who need to do really fancy stuff and if you’re reading this article chances are, that’s not you. No offense.
Of course as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. That is, most of the time. Sometimes something really excellent comes up for a very cheap price, and in the case of photo management, that program is called Google Picasa. Picasa is completely free and can be downloaded from Google for both Mac and PC. It’s not often that you come across a really great program for both the Mac and PC that is completely free. Picasa has a lot of options and integrates very well with the rest of the Google’s online applications.
Of course, there are things that Picasa can’t do, seeing as it is priced at free. If you need extra photo editing tools or even more advanced photo management tools, you’re going to want to get something a bit more robust than Picasa. For this I would recommend either Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture. Aperture has the slight edge on the management side and Lightroom has a slight edge on the photo editing side. They are however both great programs and can be bought at a relatively decent price. Lightroom for example is only about $100 with a student discount, or around $200 if you aren’t a student. Aperture is about $300.
If you’re a professional photographer, specializing in excellent product photography or any other type of photography that requires you to take many photos that might get lost, you are definitely going to want to spend the extra money and buy one of these two programs.
