A modern convenience that most US homes today is a garbage disposal. They do certainly make work in the kitchen less of a problem. That is, if you take care of the disposal and treat it right! They can last a long time, virtually problem free by following these principles.
Running water is the “oil” that keeps a garbage disposer running good. When using the disposal, your should have water running just before you put any food in it and also run the water during and after the good grinding.
Don’t use hot water. That may sound like a good idea in that it would tend to clean better your think and even sterilize the sink and disposal to some extent. The problem with hot water however is that it can cause any oily substances to pass onto deeper into your plumbing created blockage problems.
Avoid putting chemical agents or other harsh substances into the disposer. If there is blockage this is very temping because we hope it will fix the problem. Truth is, the unit itself could be damaged.
There are certain things you should never put into your disposal. Read the instructions carefully that come with your manual to what these things are. Generally they are stingy foods that even a good disposal could have trouble with. Even a formidable Badger garbage disposal can’t handle everything.
The number one rule of garbage disposals is to never put your hands in it. That means never! Use some tongs if you need to get something out, but please don’t risk your fingers.
From time to time, disposals do begin to smell. There are some simple steps you can take to counteract the problem. Many people will put some lemon pieces down the disposal and run warmish water. Or take some cubes of ice and run those through the disposal. Baking soda has a million uses and removing odors from garbage disposals is a good one. Disposals aren’t cheap. Take care of yours and it will last a long time.
