Finding the best acoustic amps

Finding an acoustic amp which effectively reproduces the great tone of your acoustic guitar at a high volume is hard. Unlike electric guitars, acoustic models rely on their clear, crisp sound for their quality; this is often difficult for many amps to replicate. Electric guitar amps distort notes when they are played; this is great for guitar solos but doesn’t really work if you want a clean sound.

What makes the process even harder is the fact that electro acoustic guitar pickups aren’t always the best, and whilst it is easy for a guitar to produce a rich sound during normal playing as soon as you plug it into an amplifier that rich, authentic acoustic sound is distorted beyond recognition. Fortunately a great acoustic amp can even compensate for a poor sounding pickup and make cheap guitars sound a lot better.

When buying acoustic guitar amps you need to consider how loud you will be playing, this will generally depend on how big the venues are your intent to play at and whether you play in a band or not. If you need an acoustic amp capable of being played at very high volume you will need to ensure it is powerful enough for you needs (30 Watts is generally adequate) and it must have effective feedback reduction systems in place to offset the inevitable screeching that occurs when playing at high volumes.

Acoustic music is notorious for producing feedback, this generally occurs because an instrument is being played at a high volume. The best acoustic guitar amps should come with features which prevent this feedback from occurring, the Yamaha Acoustasonic 30 DSP for example comes with built in feedback notch control and string dynamics control in order to prevent any of these undesired noises.

You should also consider the size of the acoustic amp, if you intended to transport it from band room to gigging venue it does help if the amp doesn’t weigh a lot.
