Crevillente The Carpet Market of Alicante
Crevillente is a municipality of the Spanish province of Alicante. At a distance of 25 km from the main city of Alicante, Crevillente is easily accessible from Alicante airport. The motorway also provides a direct route to the town. Its nearest neighbors are the popular cities of Benidorm, Alicante, Elche, Torrevieja and Murcia.
The terrain of the town has always been dry and hot making it unsuitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the greenery that is found in Crevillente is from the trees, which are mostly almond, carobs and olives. As a result of its ineptitude to nourish agriculture, the town was forced to fall back upon industry as its primary economic resource.
The town’s history is similar to that of its neighbors as it was first settled by the Iberian tribes that found their way to the region. However, their construction formed only a crude and undeveloped settlement without any semblance of a real village or town. The Romans were the first to give it this position and developed the small, scattered settlements to form a town. They improved upon the Iberian structures and added more as a part of their own contribution to the new land.
However, it was the Moors that brought to this dry land the blessing of a new irrigation system that they had developed in Africa. The introduction of these unique techniques prepared the land for agricultural produce and trees. The Moors were forced to leave the town, just like many other towns of the region, during the Christian Reconquista. After this, the town was severely low populated as a result of the battles and dangers caused.
The 18th centuy saw the manufacture of carpets begin to form an important part of Crevillente’s industry. The carpets, known as Spanish Carpets and woven from Esparto grass, were in demand and exported all over the area. Today, the carpet making industry forms the major part of Crevilente’s economy. The unique branding of the logo of Alfombras de Crevillente distinguishes the special Crevillente carpets. People from all over the world stop by, during their visits to Alicante, to ensure they have the genuine piece straight from the factory.
