In our high-tech information based society, citizen journalism is becoming quite popular. Citizen journalism occurs when a person, who is not a journalist, documents, and shares information about news and events. This is becoming incredibly easy for people to do with advances in technology like smart phones, widespread internet access, and essentially a global access to ny kind of information. There are, of course, questions as to whether or not this process is good or bad though.

With this new type of journalism, you’ll find both disadvantages and advantages arise. One of the disadvantages of citizen journalism is that average citizens are not trained in proper journalism. Having someone video tape, take pictures, or document an event is not the same as being a journalist. Real journalists aim for objectivity, and often do a lot of digging to ensure the information in their pieces is correct, and that they’ve covered the news from the right angles. This isn’t the case when regular people get their hands on news. They often inject a lot of subjectivity into the things they share. This turns their supposed journalistic piece into more of an opinionated column about something that may or may not have occurred. There are also some advantages to this process though. First, is that information about world changing events can spread quickly like a wildfire.
