Jade is a name which is given to two different stones. Both of these stones have many similar characteristics yet differ slightly in mineral composition. These stones have been used for thousands of years by many different cultures worldwide for its valuable uses in jewelry, weaponry, tools and other uses.
Nephrite is the type of jade which the Chinese have revered for millennium. There is a legend surrounding this stone which states that when man was first placed on the earth they were at the mercy of the animals of the land. When the dwarven god who created the world looked down at man he took pity on them and cast down jade stone axes so that man could defend himself. From this day forward this stone was called The Stone of Heaven.
Jadeite is another type of jade which can be much more valuable in today’s terms of prices. This is due for many reasons, it is rarer and harder are a couple of them. Jadeite is produced in commercial amounts in Burma, which the United States has an embargo on. For this reason jadeite is also more expensive than nephrite jade.
Though jade has been used for many different purposes throughout the past it is most commonly seen today as jewelry. Jade jewelry can be found at almost any price range from cheap pendants to some of the most elegant jewelry in the world. Jade can be found for ten dollars or thousands of dollars depending on its quality.
Some ways in which jade is valued are its density, hardness, color, vibrancy of that color, its translucency and its depth. These qualities differ from every stone, which makes each piece of jade completely unique. Jade can also come in almost any color imaginable, not just the cliché greens but also white, lavender, blue, black, red, orange and many other variations of color.
