Airsoft or Paintball?
This article is not trying to get Airsofters and Paintballers to get into each other’s throats but merely to help both parties to understand just how different these two recreational sports are from each other. This topic is quite sensitive and could cause for murdered soda cans lying everywhere or vandals on the streets. But for the sake of camaraderie (which is what these games really promotes), this article will just discuss an important factor which is what really attracted enthusiasts in the first place – gameplay and realism.
Airsoft
When it comes to realism, Airsoft does the trick. The weapons are so designed to mimic the real ones even the logos of the arms manufacturers of the real versions are sometimes imprinted on Airsoft guns. The receiver of Airsoft guns are sometimes made from full metal while some out of polymer plastic to give a lightweight but durable design. To add further realism, Airsoft grenades are readily available. Admittedly, the BB pellet’s small sizes makes it hard to hit targets especially when their out of the gun’s effective range. Some players even use up all the spare BBs and still can’t seem to be able to hit.
The Airsoft game relies on the players’ honesty when admitting a hit. Although there are watchers all around the field, it is still difficult to determine if a hit has been made or if it is valid. The size of the BBs also makes it hard for the players to feel a hit especially when they’re wearing vests and overalls. Deciding on a hit sometimes creates tension between the player and the watcher.
Paintball
Paintball, just like Airsoft, has a strict enforcement of the rule. It is strongly discouraged to fire upon a person within a close proximity or within a pre-declared distance. The guns are more lightweight making them easy to maneuver especially when ducking for cover. The guns of Paintball are mostly simplistic in design with just a pistol grip and a barrel. A loader is attached right on top of the gun and is gravity or battery powered. The size of the paint balls is distinctively bigger than that of Airsoft. This makes it easier to hit a target.
When a person is hit, officials will have to consider the splatter of the paint to consider it a valid hit. The splatter will have to be at least a nickel-round wide to be accepted. Splatters from a ball hitting a wall or something hard is not considered as a hit as well as being just grazed by the balls. Some rules require multiple hits on the legs for a person to be eliminated.
Both games carry the thrill of being a soldier fighting for peace or just the awesome feeling of dodging bullets. Still, nothing beats the real thing. These sports mimic the real battle out in the real world. And that’s just what they are, a mimicry of reality but should teach sportsmanship and not brutality.
